At first glance, the image appears almost entirely abstract. Warm sandy tones meet cool blue and scattered flashes of light, creating a composition of texture, colour and light. Only upon closer observation does the subject begin to reveal itself: earth meeting water, sand meeting frozen lake.

The photograph had remained in the artist’s archive for some time. Found again while searching for another image, it suddenly demanded attention.

Maybe we were different back then?

This poster print offers an accessible way to bring contemporary nature photography into an everyday environment. Rather than conventional mass-market decor, it introduces an image with a distinct visual character – open to interpretation and designed to reward a closer look.

In harmony with the Artist’s intention, the image is an invitation to pause, notice and discover another perspective within something familiar.

The photograph was featured in “Another Worlds / Inne Światy,” an exhibition and performance by Wrocławska Loża Fotograficzna, presented in Wrocław in 2026.

This artist’s original photograph ‘TheLight of Slow Freedom‘ was born from a moment of stillness – from observing nature and reflecting on questions of direction, purpose, and meaning.
What we often perceive as “upward” is not always the only path forward. Sometimes moving more slowly – or in a different, less obvious direction, even a step backward – proves to be more conscious and closer to what we truly want to achieve.
In this perspective, the direction becomes less important. What matters is the process itself – mindfulness, perseverance, and independence from others’ expectations. Like a snail moving downward, it ultimately reaches its destination – slowly and in its own rhythm – a goal known only to itself.

This reflection naturally extends into the act of hand embroidery. Embroidering stitches on a print of the original photograph becomes a slow, attentive gesture that follows its own rhythm, just like the path it contemplates.

Using luminous thread, the artist follows the natural flow of light already present in the scene. The embroidery highlights its direction, structure, and rhythm, without altering the image itself. In this way it gently reveals what was already there.

It is a visual meditation – mindfulness, expanded into material form.

For the artist, light is a symbol of goodness, truth, faith, hope, and wonder – as well as the inner spark within. This is what she chose to highlight in this project  [read more about ‘Embroidered Light’ philosophy].

‘Embroidered Light | TheLight of Slow Freedom‘ is a one-of-a-kind piece, manually finished by the artist, showcasing an original photograph enhanced with hand embroidery.

Hand embroidery is applied directly onto the fine art print using luminous gold metallic thread. Moreover, each stitch is placed individually, following the intuitive rhythm of light. No two works are identical; therefore, this piece will not be recreated.

“It could go upward” — this thought arose involuntarily and immediately prompted the artist to reflect: is that really so? Or is it merely an expectation shaped by what is familiar and ingrained — that “upward” signifies growth and success, while “downward” must mean the opposite?

Meanwhile, the snail moves downward. Along its own path. Calmly, slowly, at its own pace, toward its chosen goal. Attentive, consistent. Free — from prejudice, patterns, and others’ expectations. Perhaps “downward” sometimes means taking a few steps back: to gain perspective, to retreat, to catch one’s breath. So that later one may move “upward” along a better path. More slowly. In one’s own way.

This minimalist organic photography art embodies the philosophy and intention of Joanna Musiał-Janicka: celebrating light, presence, and the profound experience of reality.

In the gentle daylight across an open field, a group of horses stands together in quiet presence, looking out with trust and calm. Delicate grasses sway in the breeze in the foreground, naturally framing this pastoral scene. The horses embody freedom, strength, and a deep trust in nature’s rhythm.

This photograph was taken during a return from one of the family sessions the artist often photographs in the picturesque, slightly hilly region where she lives. /You are welcome to visit her Polish-language family photography site: byJMJ.pl/. Horses, with their majesty, calm, and beauty, have long inspired the artist. As a result to this is that this very photograph decorates the wall of her own bedroom.
